Seven Model UN delegates from GHS traveled to Muscatine for the Future Leaders Summit, an international conference attended by 100 US students and 100 Chinese students from Hebei province, Iowa's sister state, and Beijing. The conference brought students together to practice negotiation and diplomacy in Model UN committees, but also to foster cultural exchange and friendships between students from both countries.
Cyrus Dobe received the “Sustainability in Action” for the careful balance he struck between economic growth and agricultural sustainability in a time of geopolitical tensions in the Crisis Committee. Peyton Stevenson received the “Champion of Justice” award for her passionate defense of human rights in the Social and Humanitarian Committee.
Lilian Ford, Liam Lease, and Liam Crites were invited to present the Legal Committee’s work to the entire conference in recognition of their expert knowledge and leadership.
Ketsia Kiphanzu and Anna Schubert set a strong foundation for effective communication and negotiation in the Economic and Financial Committee.
All Grinnell High School delegates made many new friends, building a more nuanced understanding of Chinese culture and U.S.-China relations and growing in empathy.
